The Greatest Gift
As we move from the Thanksgiving season and into Christmas we often think of gifts. Gifts that we will be giving and those we will receive. We ask others what they would like for Christmas and they ask the same of us. Whenever I am asked what I want for a gift I usually first think if there is anything I need. The reality is most of the gifts that I end up with are wants and not needs but we all share the same need for salvation. Thankfully for all of us God knew our need and how to fulfill that need.
There is a famous anonymous quote that describes our great need and God’s ability to meet it. “If our greatest need had been information, God would have sent us an educator. If our greatest need had been technology, God would have sent us a scientist. If our greatest need had been money, God would have sent us an economist. If our greatest need had been pleasure, God would have sent us an entertainer. But our greatest need was forgiveness, so God sent us a Savior.”
God meet our greatest need through the gift of His Son; our Savior. Luke 2:10-11 describes how great that gift is: “but the angel reassured them. “Don’t be afraid!” he said. “I bring you good news that will bring great joy to all people. The Savior—yes, the Messiah, the Lord—has been born today in Bethlehem, the city of David!” Don’t let the business of this season cause you to forget that you have already been given the greatest gift ever. This gift fulfills the greatest need of all people if we only accept it.
