We Are Accepted

Keith Hernandez is one of baseball’s top players. He is a lifetime .300 hitter who has won numerous Golden Glove awards for excellence in fielding. He’s won a batting championship for having the highest average, the Most Valuable Player award in his league, and even the World Series. Yet with all his accomplishments he has missed out on something crucially important to him — his father’s acceptance and recognition that what he has accomplished is valuable. Listen to what he had to say in a very candid interview about his relationship with his father: “One day Keith asked his father, ‘Dad, I have a lifetime 300 batting average. What more do you want?’ His father replied, ‘But someday you’re going to look back and say, I could have done more.’”

Acceptance is one of the things that humans most long for and are willing to do almost anything to do it but it seems that so many struggle to actually find it. We try to find to find acceptance through all kinds of feats; athletic, academic, musical, or monetary but we still can be rejected by those whose acceptance we are looking for. Look at the words of Ephesians 1:5-6 and see where we can find true acceptance. God decided in advance to adopt us into His own family by bringing us to Himself through Jesus Christ. This is what He wanted to do, and it gave Him great pleasure. So we praise God for the glorious grace He has poured out on us who belong to His dear Son. (Ephesians 1:5-6 NLT).

God not only accepts us but it is His great pleasure to do so. We don’t have to perform great feats for our acceptance and, unlike Keith Hernandez’s father, our Heavenly Father can’t wait for us to be a part of His family. All we have to do to gain His acceptance is to believe in His son, Jesus Christ.
